What Are Fragrance Primers?
You can think of fragrance primer as the base coat of your manicure: the first layer of a process to ensure long-lasting results. “A fragrance primer anchors scent on the skin so your perfume lasts longer and performs better throughout the day,” says Jeniece Trizzino, VP of innovation and product at Scentbird. But why does perfume disappear so quickly without a primer?
“Dry skin absorbs perfume oil and causes it to dissipate faster, while moisturized skin creates a base that perfume oil can cling to,” she answers. The expert goes on to explain that fragrance primers are made with “slow-evaporating ingredients” that interact with the molecules of your perfume, encouraging slower release, and thus longer wear.
Some primers are intentionally unscented—affixing the perfume’s notes to your skin via a moisturizing base—while others are fragranced to intensify the projection and longevity of a perfume with similar notes. “They’re especially useful with lighter, fleeting scents since citrus, aquatic, or airy florals benefit most from a slower release,” she adds.

One of the simplest (and most affordable!) ways to get stronger, more long-lasting wear out of your favorite perfume is by slathering your preferred areas of application—whether it be behind the ears, on the neck, the inside of the wrist, etcetera—with a light layer of Vaseline petroleum jelly before spraying your fragrance directly on top. The occlusive elements within the petroleum jelly will trap the scent, sustaining longer wear, and you can even spray a bit of your favorite perfume into a small amount of Vaseline to create a solid perfume. Low-priced and totally effective.
What to Look For in a Fragrance Primer
- Hydration: Trizzino explains that all fragrance primers are essentially skincare hybrids, and the paramount characteristic among them all is hydration. “The key ingredients are moisturizing agents like glycerin, squalane, and ceramides, which hydrate the skin and create a surface that perfume molecules can grip onto rather than evaporate from,” she explains.
- pH-balancing ingredients: This is more of a nice-to-have, but it makes all the difference. “More sophisticated formulas also include peptides and pH-balancing acids like arginine and citric acid, because skin with a higher, more alkaline pH actually retains fragrance less effectively,” Trizzino adds. “Hard water, environment, and even diet can push your skin’s pH in the wrong direction, so a primer quietly corrects that before you ever apply your scent.”
- Longevity: This one’s obvious. Trizzino explains that the extra wear time a primer can offer depends on the fragrance’s interaction with your skin chemistry. “Any brand that promises an exact number should be taken with a grain of salt,” she advises. “That said, clinical testing on some of the leading primers on the market has shown wear time roughly doubling, with some users reporting fragrance lasting 16 hours compared to 6 without it,” she adds. “For lighter, more fleeting scents especially, the difference can be striking.” She advises you to think of these products as less of a guarantee and more like guard rails: giving the perfume the best environment to perform in.
What else can you use as a fragrance primer?
If you don’t want to go for a fragrance primer just yet, Trizzino recommends applying an unscented body lotion to the area of skin you plan to apply perfume to before spritzing. Just let it sit for a few minutes before spraying. “It won’t match the performance of a dedicated primer, but it gets you most of the way there for free,” she explains. “The principle is identical: hydrated skin holds scent longer, and for someone just building their fragrance routine, it’s the perfect starting point.”
