“Whatever happens, you always have us.” Umbrella Entertainment has unveiled the official Kiwi trailer for I, Object, a coming-of-age indie drama from New Zealand opening this winter down there. It’s opening in July but it doesn’t have any US release set yet – hopefully sometime not too long after this opening. I, Object is written and directed by acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker Andrew Niccol, director of Gattaca, S1m0ne, Lord of War, In Time, The Host, Good Kill, and Anon – his latest film from back in 2018. This heartfelt film follows Tom, a 10-year-old boy with a vivid imagination who sees faces in everyday objects. After the sudden death of his father, Tom retreats into a fantastical world they once shared, connecting with all these items around him! Starring Bentley Storteboom as Tom, with Skywalker Hughes, Anna Faris, Tom Kerr, & Karl Urban. This also reminds me of that IF: Imaginary Friends movie with a somewhat similar concept about a kid finding comfort in befriending all these objects. Niccol giving us a family friend film this time around.
Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Andrew Niccol’s film I, Object, direct from YouTube:

“Friendship comes in all shapes and sizes.” Grieving the loss of his father and unable to relate to the people in his life, 10-year-old Tom (Bentley Storteboom) takes refuge in the everyday objects around him; they reveal their true identities and speak to Tom, helping him in his healing process. I, Object is written and directed by New Zealand-born filmmaker Andrew Niccol, director of the films Gattaca, S1m0ne, Lord of War, In Time, The Host, Good Kill, and Anon previously. Produced by Daniel Bekerman, Polly Fryer, Craig Lyn, Andrew Niccol, Karl Urban, Timothy White, Chris Yurkovich. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Umbrella Entertainment debuts Niccol’s I, Object in New Zealand cinemas at first starting July 23rd, 2026 coming soon. No US release date is set – stay tuned. Anyone want to watch?
