“What were you thinking? You shouldn’t have listened to all of them. It’s what she wants.” 🎧 Following a successful run at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, A24 has debuted a second trailer for indie horror film undertone, formerly known as The Undertone. It’s super creepy! Set for release in US theaters in March. This scary audio horror thriller first premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal last summer because it’s a Canadian film. A podcast host covering spooky content moves in to care for her dying mother. When she’s sent recordings of a pregnant couple’s paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, each tape pushing her toward madness. “It wants to be heard!” It’s a deeply frightening audio horror film! From writer and director Ian Tuason, undertone stars mainly Nina Kiri as Evy as it’s entirely a one character in one location horror film. Along with Kris Holden-Ried, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidasand, Sarah Beaudin, Seled Calderon, and Adam DiMarco. Evy is the only main character to be shown on-screen in the film (along with her sick mother). All the other characters are heard only as off-screen voices. I saw this at Sundance at midnight one night and it scared the crap out of me! Do not miss it.

Strained by the responsibility of having to care for her dying mother, Evy (Nina Kiri) seeks respite from the loneliness of her fragmented reality. Now living in a house full of keepsakes & memories, her sanity and structure lies within her work on a supernatural podcast, The Undertone. While she usually plays skeptic to the creepy (and often disturbing) audio files sent to her by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) for podcast fodder, the latest submission hits differently. A series of 10 recordings from a young pregnant couple are unfurled one by one, each more ominous than the last. As Evy draws parallels to her current plight, hidden messages manifest, pushing her further toward madness. The Undertone, also known as just undertone, is written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Ian Tuason, making his first feature film after directing The Occurrence on Hollow Road and a few other short previously. Produced by Cody Calahan and Dan Slater. This first premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival and also screened at Sundance. A24 debuts Tuason’s undertone in select US theaters starting on March 13th, 2026 coming up. Who’s scared?
