ComingSoon is exclusively debuting the trailer for the upcoming crime documentary The Midnight Ride of Jonathan Luna. Based on Bill Keisling’s 2005 book of the same name, the film puts a two-decade-old mystery back in the spotlight.

According to the official synopsis, the movie focuses on the “early life and tragic death of a rising star in the Justice Department, including his last trial, the wild ride that took him from Baltimore to Lancaster County, and how news of his murder was kept under wraps the next day. For the first time, Luna’s colleagues: a fellow prosecutor, a federal judge, a former police commissioner, and others speak candidly to the camera. Finally, the movie uncovers a devastating character assassination that began less than three days after his death was reported.”

What do we see in The Midnight Ride of Jonathan Luna

The trailer begins with a reporter’s voiceover detailing the mysterious circumstances under which federal prosecutor Jonathan Luna died in 2003. “An assistant US attorney who had been prosecuting a Baltimore rap artist on drug charges was found dead today in Pennsylvania.”

Another reporter’s voiceover is heard, detailing the brutal nature of his death. “Torture wounds were found on Luna’s torso, and he was stabbed as many as 36 times.” The trailer also teases shocking twists that were revealed in Luna’s case. “Less than 48 hours after his death, the press reported that his killing had nothing to do with his work.”

The case took a wild turn when unexpected details emerged about “Luna’s possible relationships with two women, a $25,000 credit card debt, and evidence he may have been cruising internet dating sites looking for sex, as well as downloading pornography.” The clip ends with a thought-provoking question: “Who killed Jonathan Luna?”

Directed by Dan Cohen, the documentary is produced by Kathryn F. Galan. The Midnight Ride of Jonathan Luna will have its world theatrical premiere in Los Angeles starting November 18, 2026. It will play three screens at Laemmle Theatres, followed by a 20-city theatrical roadshow in December and early 2027. It will take the film to Lancaster, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and art houses around the country.
