Mitski on Not Doing “Proper Tour”: “Stronger Pull Towards Writing”

Mitski has explained why she’s forgoing traditional touring and choosing residencies in support of her latest album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me.

The artful indie musician said she is being drawn more towards writing in a video posted on X/Twitter. “I can’t do it at the same time,” she explained. “Some artists maybe can. I’m not someone who can do it all.”

The singer-songwriter continued, “Right now I feel a stronger pull towards writing more, and in order to do that, I have to cut back on performing.”

She added that doing fewer shows and focusing on residencies doesn’t mean she won’t do a “proper” tour ever again. “It just means that at this point in my life, I feel more excited about writing a lot.”

“I feel really, really excited about potentially getting to show you what comes of this writing period,” she said. “I can’t assure you of anything. But I feel excited about what comes of this. And I hope you are too.”

She’s not alone in the choice to do residencies. Pop star Harry Styles also chose to do multi-city residencies for his “Together, Together” tour, performing in seven cities for 60 shows. Styles said the residency format “makes the show better.”

“I think you can build something that doesn’t have to travel every night. I think the show itself is better,” he added.

Mitski kicked off an international tour in March to support Nothing’s About to Happen to Me. Instead of playing a long schedule of different venues every night, she chose 14 cities with multi-day residencies in places like New York, Los Angeles, and Sydney. Get tickets for the remaining dates of Mitski’s tour here.
